To whom it may concern,

We are Hiele Martens, the duo of Roman Hiele and Lieven Martens.

Today we reissue our debut album from 2017: Lips.

Lips is a musical story about a castellan. In eight short songs, we sing the castellan’s favors, daydreams, wishes and fears.

Back in 2016, we recorded Lips at Worm studio (Rotterdam, Netherlands) and in Hiele’s private Ziltige Olijf studio (Antwerp, Belgium). Instruments: Worm’s EMS VCS 3, ARP 2500, and Serge synthesizers; combined with our own voices and computer techniques.

Lips was originally released in may 2017 as a vinyl LP on Dennis Tyfus’ Ultra Eczema label, and in 2018 on audio cassette by Edições CN.

The album track ‘Dagdroom’ was used as a theme for Clémence Hébert’s movie ‘Kev’.

Hiele and Martens recently recorded individually for labels such as Stroom (BE), EM Records (JP) and Poole Music (US).

Hiele and Martens recently worked together with musical and visual artists like Laure Prouvost, Joachim Badenhorst, Christina Vantzou, Hamza Halloubi, a.o.

Hiele and Martens perform solo concerts in Belgium and abroad quiet regularly.

"But when you listen closer and more often, you start to notice that it’s not that random at all. That Lips is actually way more delicate. That’s it’s very well composed music. More in the line of Jaques Bekaert’s best work. A Summer Day At Stony Point comes to mind. Or Visions During Movement by JD Emmanuel. And yes, at times, this almost sounds like a mini opera.
But then again, by seeing this music as Musique Concrète, Modern Classical or opera, you would see this as 'serious work’, where it’s obviously the work of two goofs, meant in the best possible way. I mean: when I listen to this album, I can easily see two men with a beer in their hands, making fart jokes and doing silly impressions of common friends.
I don’t like to talk about music in terms of 'the best’ because music is not about competition. I leave that to sports. But what sports and music have in common is that it likes to move. "Roman Hiele driver bland annat skivetiketten Ekster där han släppt ett gäng bra skivor båda sina egna och andras. De tre samlingssskivorna de har släppt är riktigt bra, jag brukar tycka samlingsskivor är tråkiga men så är inte fallet här. Den här skivan har han spelat in tillsammans med en av mina husgudar Lieven Martens, och den är även utgiven på hans etikett Edicoes CN. Skivan består av nio spår på drygt trettio minuter, där den sista är tjugotvå minuter lång. Field recordings, små melodier på diverse instrument och en sång om fiskare framförd på italienska av Hiele (tror jag). Helt omöjligt att försöka beskriva musiken men den är förstås livsnödvändig."
